Pls don't kill me for that question, but can I somehow force the redirect to this new login method? Are all Australian checkgmail users getting this? Why can't this just be as easy as doing a SSL IMAP login? :-(.

I derived a simple python script from checkgmail some time ago - still seems to work (atom and browser), but currently also checkgmail works fine for me.
