  • Followup: RE: Which is better Lame or Faac?

LAME generally performs much better in listening tests than FAAC. Even though in theory the AAC format can provide much better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, the FAAC encoder is just not as tuned and tweaked as LAME. I would definitely choose LAME over FAAC. Btw., you might be interested in trying out the latest snapshot release of BonkEnc. It supports the Nero AAC encoder (must...

  • Followup: RE: No access for CD-Drive

Windows provides a multimedia API called MCI that can be used to play audio CDs. It does not require any special access privileges, but only allows playback, not ripping. DirectShow can also be used to play CDs without the need for direct drive access.

  • Followup: RE: No access for CD-Drive

Without direct access to the drive, you can only read the file system of a CD. Audio CDs do not have a file system so BonkEnc needs to use the ASPI or NT SCSI interface to read audio data from the disc. Btw., the trackXY.cda files you see when you access the (virtual) file system of an audio CD do not contain any actual audio data. They just describe where on the CD the individual tracks...

  • Followup: RE: No access for CD-Drive

This is a known problem with Windows XP Professional and affects any application that needs direct access to the CD drive there. The problem is that CD drive access via the ASPI and NT SCSI interfaces is restricted in the default systen security policy. It occurs only in Windows XP Professional, not in other editions of Windows XP. Microsoft has fixed this in Vista and Windows 7. There's...

  • Followup: RE: support for Nero AAC encoder

The Nero AAC encoder is already supported in the latest CVS snapshots. You need to download the Nero encoder separately. The user guide included with the 20090806 snapshot explains how to enable it.

  • Followup: RE: Command Line Output/progress indication

Hi, The current version writes its messages directly to the console, not to stdout. I plan to use stdin and stdout to support streaming IO in a future version, so I cannot write any messages there. I could make a version that prints them to stderr though, if that would help you. Robert.

  • Followup: RE: .mp3 Conversion Questions

Online stores that offer MP3s usually deliver them at 320 kbps. That's the highest bitrate possible for MP3. Other formats are often offered at lower bitrates but roughly the same quality provided by 320 kbps MP3. Depending on how much disk space you have on your MP3 player, you may want to consider converting your files to a lower bitrate. 160 kbps VBR will fit twice as many songs on your...
