I was almost done with my question when I found a solution. I thought to share it.
PROBLEM:
I am experiencing problems to connect to a red5 server when using a modified version of the MediaRss flex example.
The default demo application works with JW player when I set up the parameters
streamer: "rtmp://XXX.XXX.XXX.XX:1935/oflaDemo",
file: "108.mp3"

Apparantly QVP does not support progressive MP3 playback.
As stated in OvpConnection documentation:
"The OvpConnection class works with on-demand FLV and H.264 MP4 (both streaming and progressive) and MP3 playback (streaming only), as well as live FLV streams.".

I am making a small music player with playlist and OVP seemed to be a good base to use. However I do not succeed in modifying any of the flex test to play an mp3 file. Where is the catch in playing mp3 files? And what is the bare minimum to play an mp3 or other audio in progressive download?
Just for a note, flv plays nice.
