eBay has some pretty cheap laptops for sale, especially old iBooks and Powerbooks.
I'll send you a Hitachi p166 w/ 48megs of Ram and an internal cdrom (and about 2 minutes of battery life) if you're willing to pay for the shipping fees. I think it has win98 on it right now, but if you can write dc++ then you can definitely install linux :)
Otherwise ... I hope you can afford a new one...
