Hi, I've asked this to the maintainer of ASE Mac OS X package, and he told me that maybe it could happen if you are running on a PowerPC CPU architecture. Could you tell what CPU architecture are you using?
If you have a PowerPC he will try to prepare a binary version of Allegro with support for this CPU.

Currently ASE handles sprites like a bunch of "cels" (modules/images). Each cel is an image in a specific frame/layer. With old versions of ASE you should be able to put the same cel in other frames ("linked" in some way, so if you modified a cel then all links were modified, just one copy in memory/disk).
