In fact, I found there is now a Nikon D300 profile on the ufraw colour management page (there wasn't last year when I looked0 that works perfectly for me).

I tried your advice with my Nikon D300.
I couldn't get very close. The best I could manage was with linearity of 0.01 and gamma of 0.31.
But this is much closer than if I don't take any action (EV + 1.00, gamma 0.45, linearity 0.10), and very much closer than if I use the profile from Geoffrey Young's (crushedredpepper) Nkx_D300_standard (which opens up with EV of +1.00, Gamma of 1.00 and...

A call-on-void target crash will occur in {ST_UNICODE_CHARACTER_CLASS_INTERFACE}.alphabetic_property (or indeed in any xxx_property routine from that class) if presented with a suitable argument, such as 196608.
The cause of the crash is that {GEUC}.write_all_false_boolean_plane fails to honour its postcondition that all sub-arrays are non-Void - the code to do so is completely absent.
