CMake and GCC (on Linux/Mac OS X/Unix) or Visual Studio (on Windows) should be all that is required for basic Avida compilation. The NCurses library is needed for the text viewer on POSIX platforms.
We typically try to post Mac OS X and Windows binary packages, but they may not always be available for the most recent release.

SMT is an incomplete unsupported instruction set at this time. Future releases of Avida will address this, but no plans exist to back port the final SMT instruction set to Avida 2.6.
Transitional SMT (HW type 2) is a fully working CPU model that implements many of the ideas that will be in the SMT hardware.

Source code directory refers to the folder in which the avida source code resides.
Binary I believe specifies where you would like the install to place the target
files, though this may be ignored by the actual build system.
