btw: changing the worker= lines in the deep*mine/conf files from
worker=master-miner,chief-miner,miner
to:
worker=miner,chief-miner,master-miner
made it work for me.

I've actually experienced the same problem.
Even though the conf of the deeper mines state a master-miner, a chief-miner and a miner, the mine only requests master-miners.
