Gjiten needs utf-8 dictionary files. You probably forgot to convert them.

Data files cannot be found. This means a broken installation.
I know a popup error dialog would be a bit more user friendly.

What do you mean by "required by the installation" ?
I think it is only required to generate the documentation. The generated documentation is already in the source tarball and is not built again when issuing make, that's why the configure check isn't needed.
