Ok, here's a quick description of what I did. Main menu (default theme) > Options > Stepmania Credits > black screen / crash.

Hmm, glancing at the crash log, it says my sScreenName value is ""
how do i fix this??

I joined the smonline.us:24842 server, selected difficulty, then the game crashed.
