Upcoming Smarty 3 is slower to compile, but claims to be otherwise faster. Given that we don't use Smarty's output caching, the latter claim seems somewhat dubious in our case.
So long as we continue to separate presentation from business logic within the existing MVC architecture, we should migrate the views (*.tpl) to native php, and rely on opcode caches for the speed boost.

Coral CDN is just an example.
This feature request allows the site to prepend (or replace) links to self-hosted, static content, with the corresponding URL of such resources on a CDN.
