a parallel note on translations, a frequent ignored issue is remembering to index (all) MySQL fields that are queried against. In this case the field that holds the English key must be indexed or the searching speed will be slow.

you have to stop the mysql server to backup by direct copy,
you may render the backup unusable if you copy with the server running,

Hey, I am Argentinean, not Colombian,
probably the best way is to use "neutral Castillian", which is the one that is used for movie translations that go to South America and other Spanish speakers. It is easy to write that way, specially after seeing so many translated movies.
