Hmm, if older versions of gretl work OK on W2K pro sp4 then my diagnosis
doesn't sound right. The WSAStartup function has been called by gretl
since many versions ago. Perhaps the problem lies with the fact that
gretl 1.8.6 uses a more recent GTK (GUI toolkit) version -- maybe GTK is
calling a function that is not supported on W2K. I can't think of any
change in the gretl code itself...

Ah, maybe this is it: gretl requires winsock services via the Windows
function WSAStartup. The minimum Windows versions that support
this are Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. If
you have a lower version of W2k, gretl will not work.
Ubuntu is a good, free operating system to replace a 9-year old
version of MS Windows.
