based on openstreetmap,
http://openrouteservice.org/
provides opensource routing. could be an interesting alternative to google routing.

when creating a gps track, after each new point, the current length of the track and the accumulated ascent could be shown (the latter depends on a present DEM layer).
guess this is standard in several other gps/map software tools as it is quite useful for hiking and biking tour planning.

It would be nice to have a second plot which gives the ascending slope. the needed data (dheight and ds for successive points) is known, this should be easy.

the axes get values and lines at seemingly senseless values such as e.g. 512 m. It would be much more readable if the axes could get lines e.g. every 10, 50 or 100m.
perfect solution: allow the user to set set min, max and stepwidth for both axes.

If gpsbabel is not installed, viking states gps device N/A. I first thought this is because my selfmade cable. the debug and verbose output does not state anything about missing i/o tools. this would have saved my lots of time testing the cable...

I tested the patch, solved the broken dem download for me.
shouldn't this patch be moved to tracker>patches?.
