I would recommend trying this outside of Kernow using Saxon from the command line. If it's ok there, please get back to me. If its still wrong there, please raise it on the "saxon-help" or "xsl-list" mailing lists.

This was apparently because of using Bounce in the output widget... or possibly the way I was writing to Bounce. Either way, going back to plain text output solves this.
