I've run a complete test of a skeleton ObserverGateway implementation and all of the notification types are called once only, and at the appropriate times. Also, no matter what scheme is used, each ObserverGateway implementation is called once only per notification event independently - that is, the resource service (and any other registered services) have no effect on the implemented...

Prior to version 2, the Editor produced two files for each specification: a .ywl file and an .xml file - only xml files were/are read by the engine.
.ywl files are basically zip files containing serialisations of all the objects that are used to define a particular specification in the editor. You could in theory unzip them and unserialise the contents, but the result would be pretty useless...
