to avoid startup/cleanup and/or fork overhead on large systems it will
help to have a daemonised version or some API with startup/score/cleanup
abilities

Another thing the daemon should do is persistent monitoring of a
(configured) set of mailboxes -- using fam or gamin. Whenever new messages
are dropped into the spam/ham mailboxes by users, the database should be
updated.

I second the seconding.

It may well also be worth seeing if it can be in some way
compatible with SpamAssissin's spamd, such that it could be
called at SMTP time by Exim's exiscan addon. I'd like my
mailer to not fork off shell scripts or perl wrappers, (or
procmail) more than is strictly necessary.

I second.

An absolutely fabulous extension to this would be a milter
interface, so that spam could be turned down within the SMTP
session. That way, spam would not be silently deleted, the
user would receive feedback of the e-mails non-acceptance,
and fewer resources (i.e.: disk space, sysadmin time) are
used on the receiver side.
