Newton Package Installer for UNIX

I was wondering and please bear with me, my knowledge of Unix is slim.

I would like a port and compile this app for OS X, I have designed an Aqua
GUI similar to the original Newton Connection Utility, I constructed it
using Apples Project Builder.

I've heard about lack of OS X API's for serial connections, but I was
wondering about connection via ethernet?

How possible do you think this would be?
