5 GL memory leak - ID: 510405
Last Update: Comment added ( nobody )

Under pure DOS, if I scroll through the game list for
a while, GL will crash out every time with "Shutting
down Allegro" followed by a SIGSEGV dump (A large
amount of disk swapping occurs before the crash
indicating to me that CWSDPMI is paging to disk).

Tried every combination of configuration options, and
a short game listing of about 100 or so.

Also the problem happens whether or not you
scroll/page or not - I can repeat the problem by just
moving back & forth on the same page for a little
while.

Doesn't happen under a Windows 9x DOS box unless I
change the DPMI settings of GLaunch.exe to a limited
amount (I've been using 16MB in my testing, but the
lower the amount I set DPMI to, the quicker the crash
occurs) rather than automatic settings.

All tests performed with GL v0.97 under 98SE DOS box
with DPMI settings limited to 16 meg. Machine is a P3-
1000 with 384MB, but I've also repeated the problem on
a K6-300 with 128 (Both under 98SE) and an Athlon 700
with 128MB.

Initially I discovered the problem under 98SE pure DOS
mode though - After a while there's a huge amount of
CWSDPMI disk swapping but under 98SE DOS box (With
DPMI set to Auto) I can't get it to crash or get the
disc grinding like under pure DOS, which seems
strange... You'd think you would run out of memory
eventually under 98...

I've seen this also, the frame rate is a lot lower in pure DOS than if
running in a DOS box in win98.
