The number() function accepts numbers of the
form "+12.0", or "12.5e3", or other formats acceptable
to Java which are not permitted numeric formats in
XPath 1.0. These values should be converted to NaN,
they are actually convered to 12 and 12500
respectively.
Present in 6.4 and all previous releases.
