5 hires icon - ID: 3203111
Last Update: Attachment added ( mccannwj )

Many of the newer desktop user interfaces display icons at sizes larger than 48px. GNOME 3 will do this by default. It would be great for X-Chat to look pretty in these environments. A 256px icon would do the trick.

The very talented Jakub Steiner and Lapo Calamandrei put together a new icon with hires and lower res versions. I can give you a build system patch to put these in the right places for the system to find them.

Love to know what you think. Thanks!

encounter the same issue in Unity in Ubuntu, the xchat icons currently
shipping look grainy, would be thrilled if xchat shipped highres icons. i
agree that a highres version of the current icon is preferable to drastic
appearance change.

thanks!

I as an xchat user don't like the new icons, regardless how much time the
two guys invested in it. The svg version of the old/current icon is nicer
in my eyes.

Would using an orange X on that icon be an acceptable compromise?

To be honest I think the icons the artists have come up with are really
very nice. I prefer them to the existing ones and just making the existing
ones larger doesn't really help much I think. Also, for it to look
correct, the icon must be rendered separately at each of the sizes you see
in the attached zip file. And the high resolution version should really
have a professional detailed touch.

Removing the text from the icon is a good idea and isn't a problem at all
since the name will be presented in real text beside the icon.

It was really nice of Jakub and Lapo to spend time on these and I think
they look gorgeous. I hope you will still consider using them. Thanks.

A copy of an email I sent to C. Aillon today:

The icons in the bug arn't absolutely to my liking, I'd
prefer a better resemblance to the current xchat icon,
for recognition, by at least using the familiar orange.
I know about the idea of non-branded apps, and perhaps
removing text from icons...

I probably won't have time to fully visit this within
the Fedora deadlines, so you'll have to patch your RPM in
the meantime.

I attach you some alternative SVG files that I'm considering
using. I think these looks rather nice and surely will improve
on the unscalable PNG.

I also did plan to address some of the other GNOME 3 issues,
like notification area (systray), but I these days I'm a little
lazy to run beta/alpha versions of Linux distros and am waiting
for the Fedora 15 final to do my development :)

Is there any chance that this will be added soon? We'd really like to get
this into distributions in time for GNOME 3.0 next week as well before the
deadline for Fedora 15. Thanks!

Yes the GNOME launcher icons are larger than 48px by default. They are
also large (96px) in the alt-tab application switcher. This causes lower
res icons to appear blurry.

Where do you need such a large icon? Gnome launcher?
