5 New (Level 9) Spell for a Miscellaneous School of Magic - ID: 2895573
Last Update: Comment added ( nobody )

By Andy:

I've been going back and forth on whether to post this or not, and decided
to do so. I've noticed that there are "ultra" (i.e. Level 9) spells for
almost every school of magic:

Fire: Fire Storm
Ice: Ice Storm
Earth: Shatter
Air: Conjure Ball Lightning
Necromancy: Symbol of Torment, Death Channel, etc.
Poison: doesn't really have any Level 9 spells, but already has a lot of
devastating lower-cost spells anyway, such as Olgreb's Toxic Radiance.

For a miscellaneous Level 9 offensive-oriented spell that could be for the
schools of Enchantment, Conjurations, Translocation, or other, I have come
up with the following:

Possible Names: Psionic Pummel, Psychic Aura, Paranormal Fury, Telekinesis,
Ghost Dance

Function: When cast, a single target is chosen. ALL applicable items in
sight of the caster are launched (as missiles) in the direction of the
target, much as if each individual item had been Thrown (by a character).
Depending upon the circumstances, damage ranging from negligible to massive
may be dealt to the target, based upon how many items hit, and damage
proportional to how heavy the item is.

Provisions: Damage caused by an item will be determined by how heavy the
item is (and might thereby simplify/ease implementation).

Balancing: First is the cost of the spell. Second, only one target at a
time will likely be damaged, though other creatures might be damaged if
between the target and an incoming item. Third, the spell will be
sensitive to the current situation: if there isn't a lot of stuff laying
about, or there are simply too many enemies, an alternative solution may be
better. On the other hand, properly situating of resources and luring of
enemies could result in a viable method of eliminating powerful enemies (or
possibly thinning the ranks of multiple lesser enemies.) Fourth, other
costs and/or detrimental effects could possibly be implemented: Spell
Hunger, Cast Timeout, possibility of confusion or equivalent effect, and
the possilbility of the careless caster getting run over by flying objects.
Mayhaps objects thrown by this spell could have a chance of being damaged
or destroyed.

Summary: A spell that is substantially different from other super-spells,
while simultaneously being useful, somewhat specialized, and designed for
offensive use by magic schools OTHER THAN the normal
Fire/Ice/Earth/Air/Death/Venom schools.

Hope this proves useful to you people, and thanks for DCSS (and Linley for
the original, of course, but he ain't here no more... :( )

Whew, thanks Eino! I was a bit afraid that no one would like this idea,
but decided to post it anyway since nothing happens otherwise... :/

As for piles of objects, I was envisioning something like Apportation,
which only affects the topmost object of every item pile in sight (that way
you only have a single "projectile" coming from each pile). This would
serve at least 3 purposes I can think of: first, it will keep the display
from being bogged down by (possibly) hundreds of projectiles occuring at
once. Secondly, if the player casts the spell multiple times, only the
topmost item will be affected: this means that a pile can be used as many
times as it has items in it (because the spell uses a single item from the
pile upon each casting.) Third, it will allow the caster to observe what
will be launched at the target, since only the top item is visible by
looking (in Tiles, anyway.)

Thank you both: I completely forgot to put
"what-happens-in-cases-like-piles-of-100-darts" down! Another thing I was
thinking (and another reason to put this as a Level 9 spell) is that ANY
object is affected, as in armor, staves, books, maybe even food. Using
this spell would, like I said, be much the same as if each item was Thrown,
*except* that it would be a "perfect" throw, not "you awkwardly throw
____". To further distinguish this spell, perhaps all projectiles could
have very long ranges (10-20 squares); this would also be rather neccessary
for cases like:

Pile
|
|
You
\
\
\
Enemy

...where a pile of items is at one end of your range of vision, and an
enemy is at the opposite end of your vision (i.e. pile in the North, enemy
in the South. I didn't put it as a straight line because the player would
risk hitting themself with any projectile!)

Thanks again!

Could be a cool spell. I like spell ideas with dramatic visuals, and think
they'd be fantastic monster spells. Nasty against player archers. Also,
could make a yaktaur/centaur shaman who casts this spell after the
bandmates have first pincushioned the player once. Mwahahaha!

On the player side, sounds like a natural missile weapons/Translocations
combo. Also good against yaktaurs and stone-throwing giants (imagine a
back-and-forth between the above mentioned shaman and a player Warper). The
number of flying objects could depend on the spell power, which fixes the
100 darts problem. Not sure about L9 in that case. Love the idea!

A pile of 100 darts weights very little and would be pure murder with this
spell.
