5 Naming of mp3 files during upload - ID: 2885244
Last Update: Settings changed ( sf-robot )

Is it possible to configure the naming convention the publisher uses when
uploading the mp3 files to the web server? The current default is
date_servicetype.mp3. I am thinking that some folks might want to download
and save the mp3 on their hard drive. Then they would have to manually
rename the mp3 file to give it a more meaningful title. I am thinking
including the sermon title and maybe even the scripture reference would be
great.

Thanks!

The current naming scheme is used to guarantee uniqueness of all files held
on the server (and on users' computers), even if a Sermon title is reused.
It also allows a link to a given sermon to remain constant even if the
title were to change.

This doesn't preclude your request, however. The downloaded file name can
be different than the URL it is downloaded from and that name could contain
the current info plus add the title, etc. The big difference is that the
download would be done through a PHP file rather than directly made to an
MP3 file. This indirect downloading would be architecturally similar to the
feature request to store MP3s in the database:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1564313&group_id=176301&atid=876695

One important question is how important this feature would be. The Author,
Title, Scripture, etc. are stored in ID3 tags. Modern OSs display this info
right along with the file name. E.g. Windows XP and above tries to detect
if a folder contains music and shows the ID tags in columns to the right in
details view. Vista and above also display the info on the Details pane.

My leaning is towards keeping the file name short, but it really depends
on the common user experience. What do you see makes the best tradeoff?
