2 "Limit Framerate" : poorly labeled option - ID: 2882439
Last Update: Comment added ( sf-robot )

FreedroidRPG offers an option to save power by setting a limit on frames
per second. ( Options → Performance Tweaks → Limit Framerate
(Powersaving) ).
To how many FPS is the limit set? I think that would be worth adding to the
entry. (Limit Framerate to xy FPS: YES/NO)

Thank you for your fine work!

It's not really a new option, but the "hog" option was broken (it did not
properly rest the CPU) on my system, so I had to fix it. At the same time I
decided to change the label for something better.

"Stress system" is unclear
"Use proc. at 100%" has the dual core problem and is inverted logic : the
actual option would be "Do not use proc at 100%", which may imply lower
performance
"Relax CPU" is not too bad but I am not sure it is better than what we
have now
"Optimal efficiency" is unclear
"Infinite processor load" is unclear

So I am not sure what to chose :)
Maybe Stedevil or somebody else has an idea?

I'm moving that as an RFE. If no one can find a better label within a few
days, we'll close this issue.

Hi. :-)

There were no change on svn a while ago for quite a long time, so I less
looked after the proress of the game...

I thought it would be a new option, a new feature and didn't realize the
hog option was gone... :)

Here are some ideas for labels, but I have to admit that I am not to 100%
satisfied with them.

Stress system
Use processor to 100% (may associate the game uses dual-cores)
Relax CPU
Optimal efficiency
Infinit processor load (may associate the game uses dual-cores)

Thank you for your fine work!

Hi,

it's great to see you're still following our changes so closely. :)

The phrasing of the option is not very good - this is actually the "hog
CPU for max performance option", with a slightly better name.

The FPS are not exactly limited: when happens is that we *try* to limit to
100FPS, if there are more than 30FPS.
This means that nothing (read: no extra SDL_Delay) occurs on potentially
slow machines (arbitrarily defined as < 30FPS), and on faster machines a
10ms delay per frame is introduced. However, there is no guarantee that
this really is a 10ms delay, and for example on my machine I get about
60FPS with the limit option set to yes.

The purpose here is not to limit the FPS to a given value, this is of no
interest. It simply is to rest the CPU as much as possible while making
sure we will not slow down the game.

Can you think of a better label for the option?
