5 "Combined View" needs to be improved - ID: 2871029
Last Update: Tracker Item Submitted ( rtc1 )

I was a Brief user until yesterday, when I switched to Liferea. However,
Brief has some usability advantages that Liferea doesn't offer yet; so I
will describe here what I miss.

If you ask liferea to display the "Unread" folder in combined view, it will
mark all messages as read, and there is no way to mark only single ones.
This is very annoying if you are halfway through the unread messages and
want to look up something related the message you are currently reading in
a different message from a specific folder. Once you click that folder, all
the remaining messages you didn't read yet are gone from the "Unread"
folder and there's no way to continue with the next message one hasn't read
yet. Instead of marking messages as read, messages should have a "Mark
read" button in this mode, just as Brief does it
(http://blogtipz.com/images/2008/07/brief-rss-extension.jpg) and should
not be marked as read by default when opening a folder in this mode. If the
"Mark read" button is clicked, the message should be marked as read and
removed from the view in the "Unread" folder.

The current logic of "Combined View" also causes "Next Unread Item" to
empty the Unread folder if you are reading it (or do nothing in normal
folders). Instead, with messages not being marked as read by default (as
described above), the button should mark the topmost message as read and
jump to the next unread one, such that it aligns with to the top of the
frame (except in the "Unread" folder where, as described in the preceding
paragraph, the message marked as read should be removed from that folder)

Apart from that, the way the "flag," "bookmark" and "link cosmos" functions
are offered to the user (by some tool bar that appears under the title of
the message the user currently points at one second after he moved the
cursor there) is very inconvenient. They should all be displayed in the
same line as the title; just the way it is done in brief, together with the
"Mark read" button. (It would be good to have a "remove item" button,
too.)
