This problem is font related. For some reason some users get an unusable
font by default.

In the current SVN I've made a change to the default font - the previous
default may not have been valid anywhere, but now I've set it to a proper
font family (sans serif) which should map to a valid font everywhere. Could
one of you (OP or fdar) try with the current SVN and see if it works,
before making any changes to the font settings? It's difficult for me to
test the effect of the change since I can't see the bug.

I have just noticed the same problem with jabref 2.5 under windows XP-SP3
and java 1.6.0_15.
The appearance is the same as in the attached file.
Note 1: menu items and preview are properly displayed
Note 2: the bug exists with new inputs but also when opening an existing
bib file
Note 3: console does not show any specific error or warning
