5 option for automatically detecting encoding (totally) - ID: 2831199
Last Update: Comment added ( me-macias )

Currently smplayer provides feature for autio detection of encoding for
given (single) language. It is a bit confusing and does not work too well.
But even if it wouldn't confusing and worked great, this wish would be
still valid.

Please provide automatic detection (period -- without phrase "for given
language"). With a bit of statistics it is possible to recognize encoding
used for given text file. It won't be 100% perfect, but it would be user
call to use such feature or not. It would be great help for multilingual
users.

The autodetection is done in mplayer, and that's the way it works. From the
mplayer manpage:

-subcp enca:<language>:<fallback codepage> (ENCA only)

You can specify your language using a two letter language code to make
ENCA detect the codepage automatically. If unsure, enter anything and watch
mplayer −v output for available languages. Fallback codepage specifies
the codepage to use, when autodetection fails.

EXAMPLE:

−subcp enca:cs:latin2

Guess the encoding, assuming the subtitles are Czech, fall back on latin
2, if the detection fails.

−subcp enca:pl:cp1250

Guess the encoding for Polish, fall back on cp1250.

-----------------------------------

smplayer just provides some fields in the preferences dialog to enter the
language and the fallback encoding that that option needs.

So if you want an improved way of autodetection, you should suggest to the
mplayer developers.
