Debug build strips symbols - ID: 2828472

Even though I configured for a debug build the symbol tables were stripped
from all the compiled files. Maybe I'm missing something but I'd like the
symbols retained if a debug build is requested. I manually removed the
strip commands from the generated makefile as a workaround.
