5 Registry Editor Link - ID: 2810816
Last Update: Comment added ( stephencwll )

Hi,

Is it possible to either add a link to regedt32 in the menu or be able to
quickly open up regedt32 of the current connected computer?

Thanks,
Stephen.

Thanks Sherry! I couldn't get it to work though. I posted on your article.
I cannot find where the incremental files for SCCM Client Center are
stored. i.e. how to I update to 2.0.1.8? Sometimes I can find the link but
it merely runs that version, it doesn't install it :(

This isn't terribly elegant, but here's a couple workarounds to get regedit
or regedt32 to launch.
http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/skissinger/archive/2009/10/05/remote-regedit-roger-zander-client-center.aspx
There are compromises to be made by the person running Client Center,
so... possibly not something you'd want to officially add into the code.
But as an optional customizable thing that a person could do if they want
to, the how-to is in that blog entry.

Hi Sherry, I was unable to use the HKCurrentUser tweak on my clients... Are
there any OpenSource "regedit" tools available ? Maybe it makes more sense
to integrate a tool that allows opening remote clients... ?! or is tehre
anyone willing to create a "regedit.net" :-)

Hey Roger, that doesn't use Sendkey. It leverages the HKCurrentUser
workaround/backdoor thing. It's not very elegent, because 1) you need to
ensure the "right" version of regedt32 get's called. Some versions of
regedit don't use the hkcu keys, so it might not work for some OS'. 2) if
a person has multiple Client Center instances open, and wants to remote
regedit multiple, I've seen it go flakey using that code; and sometimes
reconnect to the same computer, instead of the 2nd one you meant. So
althought it's possible to remote regedit, it's by no means perfect.

Maybe just mention it as an optional add-on, so that people understand the
risks involved? i.e., they customize the CustomCMD themselves, so you
don't have to support a does-really-work-great command?

Hi Sherry

Maybe I'm a bit "conservative", but I don't like the "sendkey" solution...
:-(
But I will think about it...

Roger, you might already know this, but I had fun getting that to work as
an additional button to Ron Crumbaker's Web Remote Console 3.21:

If you think it's valuable, feel free to steal the code. For others, you
could steal the code and replace the "CustomCMD" tool with the vbscript
(standalone) if you were so inclined.

It does not make sense to add an icon for regedit as long as it's not
possible to open a remote client directly... (you can place the regedit
icon on your desktop :-)

The request can be reopened if there are other ideas on how to open
regedit to conect a remote client...

Thanks

Roger

Hmm. Thanks for mattbe's investigations. Maybe just a link from the drop
down menu to regedt32 would be better than nothing if other methods fail?

After some more research the trick below might not work on newer OS's so
you probably gonna want to confirm that it actually works first before
implementing anything.

This is not possible with either regedit.exe or regedt32 since they dont
have any commandline switches that support this.

Only way to achive this is to manipulate the regkey
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RegEdt32\Settings\Registry with the
value of the remote computer before launching regedt32.

See this link for an example:
http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_15553/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#15553

Hope this helps.

Matt

Hi Stephen

If you can provide me the command-line parameters of regedt32 to open the
registry of a remote computer... then I will implement this feature in the
next release...

Regards

Roger
