5 Red Hue in CR2 images - ID: 2722598
Last Update: Comment added ( rlancaste )

As I stated in the forum, when I attempt to bring a CR2 photo like the one
I am attaching into Lynkeos, it immediately takes on a red color. I am
running an Intel based Macbook Pro with Leopard 10.5.6.

Thank you for the help! So do I need to tell DCRaw about the bug then?

This hue comes from the embedded camera white balance, and what looks like
a bug in Dcraw.
Lynkeos uses the utility "Dcraw" to convert raw image files. The options
provided to Dcraw are to export a 16 bits image, without gamma correction
and, by default, taking into account the camera white balance.
When I launch Dcraw with these options and verbose output, I get that
result :

Loading Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi image from IMG_0001_1.CR2 ...
Scaling with darkness 0, saturation 4095, and
multipliers 2.415039 1.000000 1.295898 1.000000

And the converted image is indeed very red ; which is due to the 2.4 red
multiplier from the camera white balance, and the 4095 saturation level.
The real saturation level of the image seems to be around 32768. This
saturation level is choosen automatically by Dcraw.
The metadata of the image shows that the exposure was performed with the
camera set to "Auto" white balance, this is probably the source of the
weird white balance. For deep sky exposures, set the camera to "outdoor"
white balance.

In Lynkeos preferences, there is a panel to set the raw conversion
options, and you can set a manual white balance and manual black and
saturation levels. But they are quite hard to set correctly on your image.

I have now uploaded the original CR2 file after fighting the FTP server

The files would not attach because this is limited to 256 kb.

Here is a screenshot of a CR2 dragged into lynkeos
http://lancaste.home.comcast.net/~lancaste/CR2inLynkeos.png

Here is the same image converted to an Adobe DNG and then dragged into
Lynkeos

I am going to see what I can do about getting the actual CR2 image
available.
