5 Hosted Apps: MediaWiki permissions issue - ID: 2183367
Last Update: Comment added ( hinojosa )

Hi,

I have the hosted MediaWiki set up for my project, roadnav, and it's
working great, but I'm having problems with the permissions. I can edit any
roadnav wiki pages, and it looks like if I manually add people to the
editor group, they'll be able to edit pages too. However, I'd like some
pages editable by anyone with a Sourceforge account (to make it easier for
people to contribute), and I can't figure out how to do this.

With a private MediaWiki installation, I think this would entail editing
$wgGroupPermissions in LocalSettings.php in the MediaWiki install, but that
does not seem to be accessible in the hosted MediaWiki.

Is there any way to make either specific hosted MediaWiki pages, or all
MediaWiki pages by default publicly editable?

Thank you,

Rich

Rich,

I'll go ahead and escalate this. As the team reviews the issue, they are
aware that this is in place and will seek it out. I'm guessing if needed,
they will reach out for your assistance on this.

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.

Cheers!,

If you need any more info on use cases or a more detailed reason for the
feature or anything else to make the RFE, let me know and I can take some
time to put something together.

Daniel,

Sure, if you could escalate this as an RFE, that would be great.

<brief_case_for_feature>
I think wikis work best when they're mostly open (with key pages protected
using Mediawiki's protect feature), and that Wikipedia is a good example of
what can happen with a (mostly) open wiki. It's also tough for small/new
projects to get new users to contribute and I think an open wiki is less
intimidating to new users than a wiki that requires approval from a project
admin to edit.
</brief_case_for_feature>

I have a copy of Mediawiki in the roadnav project space that I'll switch
back to for now. If world editable wiki pages become available at some
point in the future, I'll certainly switch back though - it's the only
thing missing for my project.

Thanks!

Rich

Rich,

I don't see that opening up. I could escalate this as an Request For
Enhancement (RFE). Let me know if you want to go that route.

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.

Is there any possibility that the hosted Mediawiki permissions will be
globally changed in the future to default to allowing anyone to edit (along
the lines of how Wikipedia has their permissions set up)?

Thanks,

Rich

Greetings,

Unfortunately SourceForge does not support per project configuration
changes as part of our
hosted apps offering. The only way for you to provide the requested
functionality would be
to install a Mediawiki installation in the roadnav project web space that
is maintained by
your project admins.

If you have further questions please respond to this support request.
