It would help if *you* provided more information about what *you* are
doing and what *you* observed (which commands *you* typed, which files
*you* used, which messages *you* got which dar version *you* used and so
on...). You simple filled the the above *summary* "passwords with blanks do
not work" and drop this in my face without *any* details (even not
mentioned the use of "rc" file nor defined what are "blanks" for you).

I find that a bit rude.

Nevertheless, I've done a test and could successfully create, list, test,
diff and extract an encrypted archive with the below attached file named
"test.dcf" file with the commands:
dar -c test -B test.dcf
dar -l test -B test.dcf
dar -d test -B test.dcf
dar -x test -B test.dcf
dar -t test -B test.dcf

It would have been more helpful if you provided the example (rc) that
worked for you.
Since it is not recommend to use the command line option (it shows up in
the process list)
the rc file is the only recommend way to pass a password.
You want to tell me that the code that parses the command line arguments
is the same as
the one that loads the rc file and therefore it is sufficient to use the
command line to
prove that there is a bug in reading the rc file?

no rc file is necessary. If you need support please use dar-support
mailing-list.
