5 HP LaserJet 1012 ignores landscape mode request - ID: 1821671
Last Update: Settings changed ( mbroughtn )

On MacOS X Leopard using Gutenprint v5.1.3 driver for HP LaserJet 1012, it
ignores the portrait or landscape mode setting in Page Setup and always
prints in portrait mode.

To reproduce:
1) Go to any application such as Pages or TextEdit, put in one line of
text, and use Page Setup to select the rightmost orientation which has in
the past been known as landscape mode.
2) Print the document. The text will be printed on the paper in portrait
mode

My setup is

MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard)
MacBook
2GB Mem
HP LaserJet 1012 attached with USB to a Windows computer and connected from
the Mac over SMB as smb://<windowsmachine>:139/HPLaser1012

I can confirm that a gutenprint driver now will print in landscape mode in
10.5.2. However, there is still an issue where it doesn't center the print
job and it is unique to gutenprint. The PXL1010 driver doesn't have this
problem. I will open a new issue.

Hopefully this is fixed in OS X 10.5.2. One of the items in the release
notes indicates:
"Resolves an issue with some printing options, such as landscape
orientation, number of copies, two-sided printing, and so forth that may
not have functioned with some printers shared by Microsoft Windows."

Yes. This did work in a previous version of MacOS X. However, it worked
with the PXL1010 and HPJIS drivers. I have not tried the gutenprint driver
prior to 10.5. (This was mentioned in my 10-28-07 comment: "This behavior
did not occur with pxl1010 in MacOS X 10.4")

Trying to remember all that we have covered on this topic. Did you ever
have this printer working properly via a shared Windows in an earlier
version of Mac OS X?

The problem does not occur if the printer is directly attached via USB to
the Mac.

Can you try this with the printer connected directly to the Mac (rather
than through the Windows system)?

I have just tested it and am seeing the same behavior with hpijs

To reproduce, I downloaded hpijs, Foomatic, and espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg from
the link you provided and installed all three just in case. Then created a
new printer (HP1012-hpijs) and used TextEdit to print the text "Test test"
both in portrait and landscape. Portrait printed correctly with hpijs.
Landscape printed the text 5 inches down the page but not rotated, just
like PXL1010. My hp1012-gutenprint driver gave me a "unsupported
personality: PCL" error when printing anything (portrait or landscape) so
maybe I need to reboot to get it working again.

I've also noticed that all three drivers are ignoring the number of copies
selection. Put in "number of copies: 9" and you only get one page out. It
may be that none of the printer options are actually making it to the
driver.

It is noted that the same problem occurs whether using the Gutenprint
driver or the pxl1010 PPD along with Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript.

I would ask if the help requester could also try the HPIJS drivers from
"http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs" and see if
the problem also occurs with those drivers.

There have been other posts to the Apple Discussion forums indicating
other printers that are not directly supported by Gutenprint are having the
same problem.

Interestingly enough, the problem also exists with the pxl1010 ppd file.
See http://forums.macosxhints.com/showpost.php?p=418777&postcount=18 This
behavior did not occur with pxl1010 in MacOS X 10.4
