3 Network configuration for DSL people - ID: 1818104
Last Update: Comment added ( joy )

Currently the main documentation only provides network configuration
instructions useful to people who are on LAN. I tried to look into these
instructions and adapt them to my case (DSL, PPPoATM) to no avail. For
example, the description of the first connection method starts with this
sentence:

"Let's assume that the host computer's IP address is 192.168.0., the
netmask is 255.255.255.0, and that the address 192.168.0.114 is free to use
for the emulated machine"

This assumption simply doesn't hold in my case because ifconfig reports
netmask 255.255.255.255 for ppp0, which (if I understand correctly) means
that NO other address is free to use for the emulated machine.

I am stuck at this point and don't know what else to try. Tried google
already. Please help!

Good enough, sure. Reading whole Internet would be even better, I suppose.
Meanwhile, do you know of a somewhat worse guide out there? I mean about
95% worse. This one would make some 700 pages of pure goodnes if printed.
How do I find the solution to my problem in that, when even reading and
understanding the TOC took me <del>over a year since my original
request</del> half an hour?

Hi!

This sounds like a generic networking question. The fact that you are
using ppp directly from your machine to connect to your DSL ISP provider
doesn't limit you from setting up a completely independent network for
aranym and other machines that doesn't relate to ppp0. You can set that
network to route (or even bridge) into your ppp0 connection and have access
to internet from anywhere.

This is good enough guide for Network setup howto
http://linux-ip.net/html/.

Best Regards,
STanda
