Manpages misinstalled for packagers - ID: 1773629

I'm trying to build an installable binary package (similar to a Debian
.deb) for openglut-0.6.3. I do 'make install DESTDIR=/tmp/temp-root', but
the manpages still go into the "real" --prefix from ./configure. The
install: target of doc/Makefile.am should install into $(DESTDIR)$(mandir)
not $(mandir)
