1 Displayed Character name vs. User name - ID: 1710828
Last Update: Comment added ( gi_jimbo )

The system currently displays a user's name instead of the character name
when they say something. In the "role-playing spirit" wouldn't it be
better if the character name were displayed?

That would be cool, only I think that should be more up to the GM maybe?

As another alternative, what if there was a setting that allowed users to
choose which name was displayed in their chat?

That would definetly be an improvement (and I would be cool with it), but
if you were worried about the name lenght getting too long (as stated
earlier) that might be a problem. I personaly don't see it as too much of
a problem though. If anything I would say it encourages player to use
their "informal character name" in that field and put their full character
name in the character sheet (if they were dieing to have a long name).

Would a compromise such as "BlueSun (Evil Wizard dude Bob) says I eat the
pumpkin with a spoon" work? (where BlueSun is the username, and Evil Wizard
dude Bob is the charactername? That would allow people to know who to send
tells to easily (/tell BlueSun) as well as their current charactername?

Also it is good for the user name to be the name your friends know you by.
That way you can keep straight which friends are playing which characters.
It's nice to see both thier name and their character's name. But since it
is role playing, and it's set up so that it looks like "username" says -
hail traveler. I guess it just seems to make more sence to me that it
would be the character name. Also, the "long name" thing seems like kind
of a small issue to decide rather to use the user name.

I guess i can see the point, but couldn't somebody just put their long
character name in the larger portion of their character sheet? Cause lets
say you did have a user account, but were in multiple campaigns, and wanted
to have the same user account but had multiple characters within that user
account (for each campaign). And also, what if the GM were to create a few
NPC's that he/she would controll. Wouldn't it be convienient if he could
just load up each one within the same user account?

Hmm, that's a tough one. Well I can understand your point, we wanted to
allow character names to be long and multi-word in that same 'role-playing'
spirit. So the character names don't make a lot of sense as names to type
when using slash commands. If the character names are what is displayed I
think it'll make it hard for people to remember to type the user name.
Since user names are not permanent and can change from session to session
or mid game, I'd suggest role-playing oriented people would probably want
to choose names that are nicknames for their characters, so if the
character was Billy the Bard, the username might be Billy. And their is no
rule against the user name and character name being the same.
