Details:

I know it's possible to download the display from the GPS, with garmin
software and windows. But being a linux user I'm a little out of luck.
It would be cool if gpsbabel could do this.

Yes, we have some of the problem solved as we have code (the USB interface that actually works with a Garmin), but the absence of documention on Garmin's protocol for snapshots and the resulting graphics images make this a tedious reverse engineering exercise. If you come across documentation (I no longer have access to a USB protocol analyzer) on the bytes flowing over the wire, please do post them here.
