5 Hi-Res Textures & 3D Models - ID: 1664524
Last Update: Comment added ( d2x-xl )

I have all of Hi-Res textures (Walls, ceilings, power ups, other) for
D2X-XL. So I remember, I put them in TEXTURES folder and it's work. But now
I tried both D2X-XL folder and TEXTURES folder then won't work. I don't
understand why.

Please help me, thanks.

I didn't write that you wrote that you put the *.cfg in the config
subfolder. I wrote that you did *not* do that, and that's the problem. You
either have to use a subfolder exclusively, or not at all. And that is
stated in the installation manual.

I was not smartassing you :S... I never stated that I moved the *.cfg
files to the \config\ subfolder. I stated that I followed instructions as
on the website (which I quoted), after the piece about MS Windows, it
continues about Linux, so I thought the organizing of files was OPTIONAL,
not REQUIRED (as IS stated by the text there). And that by just copying the
zip content into the Descent 2 directory was all that was needed, which now
turns not (entirely) true. I made the mistake (apparently) about the
"optional" folders,

But perhaps it is a different "feature request" to have the default folder
in the zip for d2x.ini in the root installation folder instead of the
\config\ subfolder (which would make the statement true). And then you
would have the manual for the "organizing" of the files let this file to be
placed in the "correct" folder. So in the future you have (one?) less
support/bug message(s).

And maybe a statement that it is ADVISED to organize the files on the
website at the windows installation part. Might be a idea to let a
installer do the job? Nice shortcut on desktop or in the Start menu... Just
by pointing to installation directories of D1/D2, version checking original
descent files, maybe even auto-download high quality textures & other stuff
from the site during installation & copying of original files to an d2x-xl
installation folder.

And (I'm sorry to say/write) sorry for the little side-tracking in this
tracker, but it seemed related. (I'm still curious about the submitter of
this tracker, has the issue been solved?). I still have other issues, but
that's not for this tracker. (still finding my way here on SF as I
registered couple of days ago)

About Smartassing, or whatever, I was just trying to bring in my 2 cents
worth of input to your (incredible) work. That there's room for debate
about parts of text on your site is not my fault, I know it's a lot of
content to maintain. In the past few days I've looked through part of it...
it's impressive how much information is there, most commercial games don't
even have 10% of the information on a official site of wat you have. That
there is usually a "catch" to find in situations as above (below?) I can't
help.

Well, greetings, there will be no more reply's from me to keep this
tracker open.

You wrote you put d2x.ini in the config folder, but apparently not the
*.cfdg files. So d2x-xl was looking for d2x.ini in the main folder and not
the config subfolder. Don't try to smartass me.

quotation from your site, Installation:
---
MS Windows
Extract the contents of d2x-xl.zip into the Descent 2 folder. That's
it....
---

But its ok, have done this. It seems to work as well (with the d2x.ini &
*.cfg in the subfolder "config").

Thanks anyway for your response ;D

D2X-XL determines where to look for the config files by looking for the
*.cfg files. If you put these in the main folder, you cannot put d2x.ini in
the config sub folder. If I remember right the installation instruction
states that you cannot mix the installation setup (i.e. put some stuff in
subfolders and other in the main folders). Do yourself a favor and organize
everything strictly in subfolders as outlined in the online installation
instructions.

I've got it working, it seems that D2X-XL.exe does not load the d2x.ini in
the descent2\config\ folder. (

I found this by trying other features wile "walking" through this file, I
wanted my profile to load directly, & the game go fullscreen @ start, and
it didn't happen.

I Copied the d2x.ini file from the descent2\config\ folder to the
\Descent2\ folder, and everything seems to be in place & working as it
should.

The strange thing is (with NOT having the .ini file in the descent2
folder), it states that it LOADS the Hires Models, but does not USE them in
the game after that.

What is the setting of -cache_textures (if it exists in d2x.ini)?
What is your texture quality setting (render options dialog)?
run d2x-xl with the -printlog parameter and post d2x.log here.

I seem to have the same problem, what I've done:

- Installed Descent2 into c:\games\Descent2\
- Patched to v1.2
- Copied the contents of the zip file into the descent2\ folder (e.g.
"d2x-xl.exe" is in the descent2\ folder, not a subfolder of it.
- downloaded and extracted all the models and textures;
Hires Models extracted into c:\games\descent2\models\ (no subfolders
there)
Hires Textures extracted into c:\games\descent2\textures\ (no subfolders
there)
- Please note that I did NOT move any file to another folder, not
withstanding the comments on the "installation" page of the website,
because you state on top of that same page that copying the contents of
your zip file into the descent2 folder would "do" it.

When the "Models" directory is there with the downloadable "Hires models"
the d2x-xl gives a message "Loading hires models" when starting the game.

Checked for the "-hires_textures 1" line in the
c:\games\descent2\config\d2x.ini file, and is not commented out, or on any
other value.

Tried so far:
Putting the textures in the models folder (with & without the hires
models)
When BOTH are in the "Models" subdirectory, the "loading hires models"
seems to be displayed a bit longer, but I don't see a difference (with,
without, or with both)

Please run d2x-xl using the -printlog command line parameter (you can add
it to d2x.ini) and post the resulting d2x.log (find it in the Descent
folder) here.

Make sure that the textures folder does not contain another textures
folder holding the actual textures. As the textures archive already
contains that folder, people sometimes make this mistake.

You also need to set '-hires_textures 1' in d2x.ini.

Let me know whether this helped you.
