(.po.gmo).

The problem is in lines 181 and 185 in maintenance/gen_am.sh that generates
po/Makefile.am

.po.mo:
$(MSGFMT) -o $@ $<

.po.gmo:
file=$(srcdir)/`echo $* | sed 's,.*/,,'`.gmo \
&& rm -f $$file && $(GMSGFMT) -o $$file $<
