5 Download link in Javascript?! - ID: 1504008
Last Update: Settings changed ( burley )

Hi there,

can you please change the download link back to the
actual link. E.g. instead of

javascript:document.dlform.submit()

please point the link to the actual file again - as it
has been for the last couple of years.

That would make it much easier to copy the link to the
clipboard and from there to a remote server.

Thanks

This modification is making installing and using open-source
software much more difficult. Its a bummer - because
open-source needs all the help it can get - and this doesn't
make it any easier.

Please fix this.

seconded...

And while you are at it, if you could restore ftp services
as well - a lot of people are behind firewalls with
redirecting proxies - which renders things like wget over
http useless.

If you could open up a server or two (ftp1.sourceforge.net,
ftp2.sourceforge.net, etc.) and make it anonymously
available, it would be *most* appreciated..

As a fellow wgetter, I move for this javascript business to
be banished from the realm of sf.

Seriously, how the hell am I meant to tell a remote SSH

Given that a very large % of SF.net's users download files
onto Linux/etc systems using utilities like wget, the new
javascript change has only made this more difficult.

I don't have a problem looking at an ad banner when I try to
download an OSS package. However I would appreciate an
easier way to copy and paste the download link.

This is going to make it difficult for those without javascript capable
browsers
and those who use assistive devices to surf the web. Sourceforge needs to
take
this seriously and should be reverted to the original system ASAP.

Please make it easy to download files from "wget" and
similar tools. Please understand that it may be necessary
to create a "fork" of sourceforge if it ceases to be the
Open Source enabling site that it's famous for. If it
becomes too commercial, it will be limited to the
commercial web like the telecoms that are attempting to
charge for access. When the grass-roots global mesh is
completely cut-over that doesn't require the telecoms,
sourceforge will be left behind. Technology has already
moved on.

Guys: while it is important to express your outrage,
realize that SF has no intention of changing this. This was
not done by accident or as a result of sloppy coding. They
CHOSE to do this. The only question left is what will you
choose to do.

Seconded. Please restore the original non-javascript link

often downloaded to the machine browsing to SourceForge,
instead the link is curl/wget/lynx -source'd to a system

I simply would like to agree with the oft-stated sentiment
that this frustrates users who liked to copy the download
URL to pass it to wget.

That's what I used to do. Now it's a pain to download from
SourceForge. This alternative:

<a
href="http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jscalendar/jscalendar-1.0.zip"
onclick="document.dlform.submit(); return
false;">http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jscalendar/jscalendar-1.0.zip</a>

would be much nicer.

You *CAN* copy that link and it works. It doesn't require

Like the countless commenters above, I find this change
arbitrary and pathetic. To whoever designed this piece of
code, here is how to implement such a (mis-)feature properly.

Not:
<a
href="javascript:document.dlform.submit()">http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jscalendar/jscalendar-1.0.zip</a>

But:
<a
href="http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jscalendar/jscalendar-1.0.zip"
onclick="document.dlform.submit(); return
false;">http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/jscalendar/jscalendar-1.0.zip</a>

For those browsers where javascript is available and
enabled, they will execute the onclick handler. For those
which are not, or for much of the people downloading from
SF, who just need to right-click and copy, it will STILL WORK!

I have numerous projects hosted here, I've donated and
subscribed. I've used SourceForge for several years, and
advocated its use almost as long.

But this change is entirely negative for the end-users. It
breaks wget compatibility, it forces the user to take an
extra step to get to the information they need, it prevents
non-js browsers from downloading..

Revert this change. Please. You will definitely not receive

can't understand the reasoning behind forcing JavaScript.
It's already been mentioned, but that makes it not work at

I am YAJLH - Yet Another JavaScript Link Hater.

I have always considered tricks like hidden form submissions
to be nasty artifacts of bad web site management systems or
webmasters who want to make complicated, obtuse systems.
I've always liked how simple Sourceforge is, and that
JavaScript was used only for enhancements, not functionality.

Please keep it the way it was!

i think adding an additional 'copy link' feature would make
more sense; this could also be used to intercept and log
download data (the reason i assume javascript has been
added), but make it easier for people using a CLI to
download - it would avoid situations where people simply
copy the link and download using wget or similar and bypass
the system (perhaps add a unique download id or something to
the url).
best of both worlds...

I personally have recommended other developers to avoid SF
for exactly this reason: they can change the method of
hosting and access at any time, without rhyme or reason.

SF probably lost one or two accounts; not a big deal, but
the readers of this thread can make a difference in bulk.

This change is a pain - it's a pain to paste the link into
an ssh session on a remote server to wget the file.

Please -- I like the way Source Forge used to be. I like
to use a download manager (StarDownloader) because my
connection sucks, it's slow and cuts out, and FireFox is
awful at resuming downloads. But with this new JavaScript
document running on your page, I have to cross my fingers
everytime I download something from SourceForge, hoping my
connection won't die. But it does. And I have to start
over.

So, please, stop sucking and go back to being awesome.

This is a really bad change, 99% of the time I just want
the url and wget it, sometimes remote, sometimes a local
terminal. This change costs time on my side, I dread the
day I need something and my only interface is a shell in a
co-location.

Last time I checked, this was sourceforge.net and not
msdn!

Yes, I'm suprised at this. Considering the number of
projects hosted on SF that you'd want to just copy the URL
from and run the download on a remote machine, it seems like
a very bad decision, aside from the fact that use of
javascript in href attributes erks the hell out of me and
that "javascript:" is not a valid URI.

Besides it broke wget downoalds, I used to copy the target
URL (using my browser's "Copy Link Location" action) into
another target and then replace the mirror in the URL with
my nearest one (citkit). That's now requires tricky
drag-selection-over-then-copy-text action. It's *very*
inconvenient and.

Please, revert it back to the behaviour that had been the
standard for years!

Please go back to the other form of downloading. It was
particularly useful for those of us who have dialup

Yet another vote for usability and against breaking of
standards. Please revert this back to the expected behavior.
We have to deal this this kind of frustration with other
sites, we shouldn't need to at sourceforge.

I also frequently use wget from one of my shells to download
projects from SourceForge. Please get rid of this.

the javascript kills this in the links browser. doing quite
a bit of text based terminal browsing, this causes major
problems. :(

Please revert this.

Please switch the downloading system back! I have a system
setup through which I daily download a project files using
wget, automatically unpack them then compile them for two
different platforms. I need to be able to automatically work
with wget, and with your new change I am now unable to do that!

This change has made downloading via wget (many/most
developers' normal method of retrieving files) extremely
difficult. Please revert.

Here's a greaseMonkey script to correct this 'issue':

// ==UserScript==
// @name SourceForge Download Link Fixer
// @namespace cypherpunks
// @description Fixes the download link form a javascript
function to a regular url
// @include http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/*
// ==/UserScript==
var x=document.getElementsByTagName("a");
for(var i =0;i<x.length;i++) {
if(x[i].getAttribute('href') ==
'javascript:document.dlform.submit()') {
x[i].setAttribute('href',x[i].innerHTML);
i=x.length;
}
}

I had at least two projects where the download would never
even start. This "feature" sucks, and it's annoying.

I typically surf for what I need, then stop the auto
download, copy the link and WGET it thru a shell on a
server.. Now because of this JS BS, I can't do that... WTF?
Who was thinking over there?

This site is populated with loads of people who surf w/o JS
and it's so-called enriching experience...

Get rid of it - or you may end up getting rid of all your
users...

There is nothing more annoying than these stupid "your download will begin

shortly" and jumping through 8 pages to get the damn file.

Change it back, please.

Please switch the operation back to the way it was before.

I never use the automatic download. I always stop it and copy the link to
the
clipboard and switch to a shell and paste it after wget. This lets me put
the code
where I want to easily.

You've made it much harder.

Using javascript in place of good ole HTML is just plain
stupid. At least make it a user preference, or preferrably
just get rid of it! (direct links are nice...)

This new "feature" creates alot of headaches for someone
attempting to download a file in a shell.

Please restore the old style linking.

I agree, please revert back to the previous method. This is
more of hassle, I have several places I was linking to
files on my servers, now I'm going to have to manually copy
them over. I really don't have time for that.
Please consider going back to the direct link method.

Sincerely,
Roman

Yes, please revert, highlighting the entire link and copying
it is a painful process compared to using the copy link

I concur.

This is a major problem for a couple of reasons:
1) as previously stated, we can no longer easily copy the
url for downloading to remote servers
2) javascript doesn't work on browsers that don't support
javascript, and also on browsers with javascript disabled
(such as lynx, or firefox with the NoScript extension)
