5 [G2] Need ability to "upload" from existing directory - ID: 1496263
Last Update: Settings changed ( ckdake )

I would like G2 to automatically (or semi-automaticlly)
look into my albums directory, and pick up any new
items (albums and photos) that it currently does not
have in its database.

This is different from the "upload from local server".

In this feature, it is not going to be copying any
files, but simply become aware of their existence.

This is useful when I have to do bulk uploads of files.

I have a directory of photos on my home PC. I add new
photos their, periodically. If G2 had this "scan"
feature, I would simply be able to do a "resync"
command, transfer the files to "albums" directory, and
then tell G2 to start including these files.

For example:

1) I create a directory called "foo" under "albums"
2) I places some photos under their
3) I now tell G2 to "scan" the "foo" directory in
4) It now creates an album called "foo" and adds the
photos automatically. If the "foo" album existed from
before, it simply adds the new photos. If the photos
also existed, it simply updates its database with the
new photos.

Monitoring of folders is something most competitors offer, and is very
nice, especially for those who manage their photos in another package. I
know I won't be using gallery until it supports directory monitoring. I'm
sure many others are in the same boat.

Its looks easy enough to implement, would only require some simple changes
to the functions that add albums and images (i.e. stop them always creating
directories and copying files), and then a module could be written to do
the rest of the work. In actual fact, the function that adds images has
source and destination, if they are the same, don't copy the file, just add
to the DB. Simple.

Yes, I totally agree. It would be so nice to be able to ftp
directly into the gallery, rather than the two-step process
of first upload, then import.
