3 Setting the context by a cookie. - ID: 1475363
Last Update: Comment added ( skorvek )

Use this SW both at work and home. I have created two
contexts, @HOME and @WORK (because thats how I
understand the use of context) and would like to have
only projects in the selected context to show up unless
I do something actively to see the other items.

I find it annoying to see the projects I have at home
when I am at work because some of these projects are
distracting my mind during work. (I try to mentally
block home projects from work, and then it is very bad
to get them in the face during updating of projects at
work.)

The problem is really that the context @HOME is the
default because of the alphabetic sort even for tasks
at work. This is a bit annoying.

It would be nice if a cookie could be set on the
machine which decide the default context for things
that happen from this machine. By making an additional
link available all context can be made temporarily
available.

As noted in the comments, this is really more of an issue
with the Category filter. That is, if I generate a report
on Projects, set the filter to 'Professional' to show only
work-related projects, and then generate another Project
report, the filter goes back to 'Any.'

I really feel that this is something that will make this
program MUCH more effective. In its current state, it just
serves as a constant reminder of all the non-work-related
projects that I have going on while I'm at work. Seems sort
of the opposite of the GTD approach - constantly putting
things in front of you that are not relevant.

I figure it could be implemented as a cookie that stores the
last chosen filters. So, until a user sets the filter back
to 'Any,' it stays put.

Did this solve your problem?

See what o.6 does for you in a few weeks and let me know if
you are still getting distracted.

After having read your comment, I think I have had a
different understanding of context. If I am in the vincinity
of a telephone, I would be in the "telephone" context no
matter if I were at work or sitting at home or having my
mobile phone in my pocket if I understand you correctly?

I have so far used the categories to set the nature of a
project or a task. In my thinking a project and its tasks
can have many categories, not all of them are equal as some
have higher priority, some are for the team and some are for
me personally. Context has for me been the state that I am
in, like at work, or at home or on holiday.

David Allen use an example like "I have some free time and I
am in the vincinity of a telephone, what could I do next?"
In this case I would like to see everything possible for
telephoning, but nothing that should be read or bought or
whatever.

At work I am 99% in the context work and when I have a spare
moment in the vincinity of a telephone I would like to see
only telephoning items from my work context, because if I
at this point got a thing from home on the list, my thoughts
could start drifting and I would get disturbed. If I select
to be in a context like "at work" and I have some spare
time, and I can handle tasks from any context, then I could
specificly ask for tasks from all contexts.

As you see, I have a specific problem to solve: How to stay
on track. If I put a lot of tasks into my system, I will be
overloaded by the number of next items and projects showing
up on a the list and I get a problem organizing myself. This
is really a problem as my brain produce too many ideas on
how to solve a problem so that solving the problem becomes a
problem itself.

I will look into organizing the way you describe and see if
that will be of more help.

Do you mean contexts or categories?

I place actions/items in contexts. Whole projects don't
have contexts. To solve the delimma you are talking about,
I have created categories for projects-- I use personal,
home, and professional for my categories. My contexts
include home, office, errands, computer, phone, etc...
since I can make both personal and professional calls from a
phone, but when I'm looking at my projects listing, I want
the projects separate.

With the new database, it would be possible to filter the
context items by project category (for example only show
items in the phone context that are also in professional
projects)... but it might add more complexity to the UI. I
would not favor setting cookies... what if I WANTED to check
my personal projects on a lunch break or right before going
home, checking if there's any errands I can run on the way
home? However, toggling various filters might work.

Give me more examples of what you want to do...
eventually this whole thing might be user-customizable.
