Details:

When typing text like :), it would be nice if they got
replaced by graphical smilies, like dnoe with other IM
clients.

AChat did support smilies prior to version 0.120, but those versions were not able to support unicode. Try 0.113 to have smilies, no unicode and a bunch of bugs ;)
