5 [G2] Flickr Style Tags/Virtual Albums - ID: 1204624
Last Update: Comment added ( mindless )

From http://www.flickr.com/help.gne#37:

"Tags are like keywords or labels that you can add to a
photo to make it easier to find later. You can tag a
photo with tags like "catherine yosemite hiking
mountain trail" and then later on if you are looking
for pictures of Catherine you can just click on that
tag and get all photos that have been tagged that way."

Basically that lets you do http://example.com/<tag> and
it makes a search (mod_rewrite rule?) based on the
content of <tag>. This allows people to quickly search
your gallery for any images, based on a simple url with
a keyword.

I am closing this feature request. G2 now supports dynamic
albums and the Keyword Albums module does provide a way to
use this feature with simple urls like gallery2/key/yosemite
etc, as described in the description of this feature
request. I'm sure there are more things people will want
from dynamic albums, but I think it's better to file new
requests with specific details rather than collect all those
ideas here in a single request. Hope you all enjoy this new
feature!

Try "Edit Captions" to edit keywords.

Use KeywordAlbum.inc as an example and you can make any
dynamic album you like!

I like the first Implementation - I already have some ideas:

- a bulk keyword editor (for those who were lazy maintaining
keywords in the past ;))

- an extension to use ratings as "keywords" - display all
5-star items in a virtual album would be great

Many Thanks for all the efforts done so far !!

Tags should be imported from IPTC Keywords and XMP Keywords
(XMP Core, Dublin Core).

I would like to note here that Windows Vista's new Windows
Photo Gallery supports this form of tagging -- very useful
indeed -- and it stores the tagging info for each file in
its EXIF information under the keys "Xmpmeta Subject" and
"Xmpmeta Last Keyword XMP". For instance, I have an image
that depicts two of my pet birds, Petey and Chrissy, and
have it tagged as follows:

Xmpmeta Subject : pets/birds/Petey
Xmpmeta Subject : pets/birds/Chrissy
Xmpmeta Last Keyword XMP : pets/birds/Petey
Xmpmeta Last Keyword XMP : pets/birds/Chrissy

This is kind of a tree of tags. pets/ contains birds/ and
cocoa/ (my dog) and under birds/ is Petey, Chrissy and
Peaches. Selecting Pets in the Windows Gallery shows all
items under it regardless of if they have the actual single
pets tag assigned, as long as something under pets is
assigned. Likewise selecting only Petey shows only the
pictures containing the bright yellow and green parakeet
bearing that name.

What I am suggesting here, for compatability, is that it be
designed to, upon import, create any tags found in these
Xmpmeta tags. Essentially, use what the EXIF data tells us
instead of importing it cluelessly. Since I've tagged most
of my rather large amount of photos with Windows Gallery
recently it would save a lot of time once this feature is in
Gallery.

Yes, this is a must have feature! Smart Albums are a must! Being able to
create
albums on the fly, nothing for administrators or users to do, simply
uploading
pictures and tagging them appropriately would get them "added" to the
album.
Think Smart Playlists in iTunes.

Maybe these virtual albums can also be useful for users?

Means: You click on a user name and then all all of his
uploads are listed like albums (instead of a plain list like
it's done in the Members module), sorted by Albums and/or by
newest uploads.

My number one request by miles. Being able to put the same
image with its associated database infomation in multiple
virtual folders/categories (like Flickr sets) would be
incredibly useful. As it is, having 3 versions of the same
image with different views, comments etc, in different
categories (eg France, Landscapes, Most Popular) is a real
pain and extremely inefficient. Normalising (ie not
duplicating) data is a basic principle of databases and is
what relational databases are good at, after all!

I love Gallery2 and if this feature is implemented I will
definitely port over another of my community gallery sites
from Coppermine, which is also hobbled in this way. Keep up
the good work!

Great Feature. I would love the ability to be able to create a list ov
tags to
choose from as well as to add new tags.

Would be nice if the tags could be added to the keywords of the fotos
Metadata
(is it calles EXIF?). So the work of tagging pictures is not lost if the
Pictures are
extracted from the Album. And already tagged (with keywords) Pictures from

Adobe Bridge ould be seemlesly integrated in a gallery and vice versa.

Thanks for the work on Gallery!

While i think that the introduction of some type of
taxonomical system is desirable i would like to suggest one
that allows for a slightly higher degree of structure.
Allowing admins to create multiple "vocabulary sets" that
define different aspects of the "entity" in an optionally
hierarchical fashion. A few common examples of what users
might make for vocabs:

Who (subject):
-Family
--Michael
--Kate
--kari
-Friends
--Ayed

What:
-Holidays
--Thanksgiving
--4th of July

Where
-US
--Texas
---Austin
--Hawaii
---Maui

When (skimmed from EXIF):
Year
-Month
--Day

As you can see you'd assign multiple vocabs to a single item
defining it more clearly with each aspect you tag. Locating
untagged items in each vocab would be easy too. The tags
could also be unstructured flicker like folksonomies if
desired with no ill effect. I would suggest abstracting out
the storage mechanism from the gallery album organization at
this level though because the tags (or unions of tags) will
substitute most gallery requirements. for example you can
select the union of Easter pictures from 2006 with family in
them and "alias" that union as a "virtual album". That way
you can store the gallery items in the most efficient method
for file storage/retrieval as well. I spoke with bharat a
while back about using modified preordered tree traversal to
achieve the hierarchical taxonomy goal and i have also
researched Drupals implementation of a similar scheme
withttheir new "category" modules for the 4.7 branch. -mf

This is would be a killer addition.

Flickr is hot not only from a general user stand point but it's defining
the idea of
"Folksonomy" in a big way. Meta Data is huge. This feature would make G2
on
the cutting edge of DAM systems putting a head of commercial software.

Here's another, educational use that tags could serve: an
illustrated glossary.

Let's say you have a list of terms that can be matched with
images that illustrate them. For example, you could have
terms for different types of rock formations. When users
call up the term, they are shown all the images that are
tagged with that term. If they then go to one of those
images, thumbnails could show all the other images that have
been similarly tagged.

Or, in a classroom situation, a set of images could be
tagged for a specific class. When the instructor calls up
that tag, he/she would be shown all the images in that set
and could use them in, say, a lecture. Perhaps, the option
of running them in a slide show would be helpful.

I don't know if this would be possible, but to add to the
usefulness of tags, it would be great if you could have
users rate the appropriateness of the tag. That way, a
general consensus could build about the usefulness of a
particular image to be tagged a particular way.

In any event, Flickr-style tags are a terrific idea.

I also would like to see this. Flickr is a good example.
E.g. I want a single file of a Scottish Black and White
Landscape to appear in the 'Scotland', B&W', and
'Landscape' albums without having to duplicate the image.

If this is implemented, a simple set of tag set operations
(intersection, union, negation) should also be implemented
(a la del.icio.us, only more complete). I think it would be
relatively trivial to specify and code, and I would be happy
to help hack on it.

Closing other one. heres the text:

I'd like to see "smart albums" implemented. This would
allow you to
have an album that would "capture" photos based on keywords,
exif
data, filename, or other photo parameters, without having to
manually add/move photos to multiple albums.

For instance, let's say I collect and photograph widgets and
I have
the following albums on my site:
Latest widgets (last 7 days)
Shiny widgets
Dull widgets

I want to be able to upload all of my new widget photos to
latest
widgets album, then have gallery automatically populate the
"shiny"
and "dull" albums with photos that have those keywords in
them. I'd
also want the "latest" album to release the photos after X
number of
days, in this case 7.

We could make URL Rewrite patterns for the Search module.
Eg, /gallery2/search/bleh would show the search result for
