5 [G2] "Link Item" should work like a sym link... - ID: 1176783
Last Update: Settings changed ( ckdake )

The feature of being able to post "Items in multiple
albums" seems to be high on the list of features (it's
recorded in the list of the most requested features).
G2 implements a feature called "link item" that makes a
copy of an image available in another album, but its
meta data doesn't remain linked.

I would like to request that the "link item" behave
like a symbolic link such that operations on the link's
meta data take effect on the orginal, and vis versa.

A detailed description of why this is important is
available here:

Actually, the "link item" feature does not copy the image
per se - in this sense, it works like a symbolic link. The
way meta data is seperated has both positive and negative
effects. On the positive, in different albums, you may
indeed want different titles and descriptions of the same
picture. (For example, to highlight different aspects of a
photo according to album subject.) On the negative, it is
hard to collect aggregated statistics. There is not even an
obvious way to know which images are linked. I prefer
seeing statistics on the same picture collectively, and
absolutely want a way to know which images are linked.

Maybe the default linking should copy all text info in the
new meta entry.

Agreed. Also, it would be awesome if sub-albums could be
linked to more than one parent. For example in my albums I
have an album for artwork and one for travel photos. Say I
go to an art museum like the Louvre. It'd be great if I
could have the Louvre album under both "Paris" and
"Artworks" without having to waste disk space and work time
making two copies. You can make symlinks under *nix for
directories as well as files, Gallery should allow the same.
