5 [G2] Movie thumbnail creation with MPlayer - ID: 1170042
Last Update: Settings changed ( ckdake )

I requested a feature at the discussion forum over at
gallery.menalto.com. Here is the post/discussion of it:

http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?
name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=27901

I noticed in your Most "Requested Features" page that
windowsmedia/wmv was a requested file format. The ffmpeg
module supports among the wmv file format a lot of other formats
and codecs natively, but (under linux) it can't handle all codecs that
haven't been reverse engineered, like mplayer do. In that sense
mplayer will always support a wider range of formats and codecs
than ffmpeg will since you in mplayer only need the binary codecs.

I wish it were that easy. The syntax for mplayer will
work and in fact the suggested syntax for only using
mplayer by asspalmer in that post works just as well. I
have looked at the code for the ffmpeg module with the
hopes of modifying it, and creating a new Mplayer module,
but there is so much going on that I dont even know where
to start. I have recently just been trying to hack it so
that the part the generates the thumbnail within the
module will use mplayer instead of ffmpeg, even if I have
to hard code it, but alas still no luck yet. What
irritates me is two-fold. One I dont understand why they
didnt use mplayer in the first place. I see no
dissadvantages, but with the codec support , tons of
advantages. Two, with how small the module for ffmpeg is,
and since it could probably be used as a template, I bet
someone that is very familiar with PHP, which I am not,
Could probably code the whole module in an hour or so. Oh
well, that being said I still love gallery and all the
hard work they have put into it.

mplayer module for G2 = an alternative movie toolkit for G2
ffmpeg does NOT support WMV9 codec. Mplayer is available
for linux AND windows, including binaries.
Please see the G1 Mplayer mod as starting point:
