I absolutely like to second the comment by Paul (pghmfc).
In my opinion we should stick to a 'minimal' gotmail, and
leave the other functionality to other programs, that mostly
exist.
Also the discussion about usage with this or that mail
reader should be shortcircuited according to me.

As an illustration I give my setup :

gotmail -> procmail -> /var/spool/mail/* mailboxes
Then a pop3 server is running on /var/spool/mail/.
Whatever pop3 client can now connect and do whatever he wants.
I did not find any combination of users, clients that didn't
work well that way.

There's no need to reinvent the wheel here. Gotmail already
supports delivery via procmail, and procmail supports maildir.

Adding maildir support would make it easier to use with
sylpheed. I'd like this too.

Well, it would still be in the mbox format but only one
email per mbox, right? We dont' want to make some new
standard...

Unless, these email dumps are just like text file dumps of
the content per message.
