It would be great and absolutly useful to be able to write back IPTC data
in the metadata area of the picture.
Today, if I change description of my picture, and then download it, the
old description will be the official description. It's not correct !
Because you fill the description, keywords, subject, ... fields with IPTC
data at upload, you should be able to write this data back in the picture
if they change !

Would this enable to store the keywords directly in the file? Would be
great!

The only EXIF data I would write back would be a mass update of comments /
photographer / owner info, I'm not sure there would need to be a change to
focal length or shutter speed....

For a PHP5-only solution you might want to look at my PHP
Exif Library (http://pel.sf.net/) which can read Exif data
and write (changed) data back to the original images.

it would be very useful to be able to edit and search
metadata exif and iptc information. Especially for
photographers.

may be better to go with XMP over IPTC but adobe is still working on XMP.
There
is an XMP toolkit, but not as much as there is for IPTC.

such as the php script IPTC parse:
http://us3.php.net/manual/en/function.iptcparse.php

XMP toolkit:
http://labs.macromedia.com/technologies/xmptoolkit/
