5 Master RFE: Project web service upgrade - ID: 1052417
Last Update: Comment added ( hinojosa )

Greetings,

As follows is detail regarding our plans for a
significant upgrade to the project web service. We
expect a similar announcement of this upgrade will be
sent by email during the two week period starting
2004-10-22.

This master RFE has been posted as to provide details
of the upcoming upgrade to the SourceForge.net project
web service. This RFE will be used to close a number of
outstanding RFEs (Feature Requests) which have
requested upgrades to the project web service. Users
interested in this upgrade should monitor this RFE.
Updates to this request will be posted by
SourceForge.net staff as the upgrade is scheduled and
once it has been completed.

-----

The SourceForge.net team is pleased to announce the
long-awaited upgrade to our project web service.
SourceForge.net staff are currently in the process of
completing hardware procurement and system build-out.
The official date for this upgrade has not yet been
set; once our hardware build-out has been completed,
the date will be announced on the SourceForge.net Site
Status page.
https://sourceforge.net/docs/A04/

This upgrade consists of a significant hardware upgrade
and Operating System upgrade. Due to the large upgrades
involved here, it may be necessary to upgrade your scripts.

Old configuration:

Debian Potato
Linux kernel 2.4.x
GNU libc 2.2.1
Apache 1.3.26
Perl 5.005_03
PHP 4.0.3pl1
Python 1.5.2
Tcl 8.0

New configuration:

Fedora Linux: Fedora Core 2
Linux kernel 2.6.x
GNU libc 2.3.3
Apache 2.0.51
Perl 5.8.3
PHP 4.3.8
Python 2.3.3
Tcl 8.4.5

Additional upgrades may be performed after this initial
upgrade is completed; any follow-up changes will be
announced via the Site Status page.

A host roughly matching the configuration of the new
project web servers is being placed within the Compile
Farm on 2004-10-22. Additional information regarding
the Compile Farm may be found at:
https://sourceforge.net/docs/E02/

Questions or concerns regarding this upgrade may be
directed to SourceForge.net staff by submitting a
Support Request as per:
https://sourceforge.net/docs/C01/#support_site

-----

As part of this upgrade, we will be implementing a
software installation and update policy similar to the
documented policy that is used for the Compile Farm.
The project web servers and shell servers will be
installed with vendor-supplied packages; upgrades to
these packages will be applied as they are released by
the OS vendor.

Projects who need other software installed should
install that software in their group directory.
Software may be built using the x86-linux2 host within
the Compile Farm (Fedora Core 2). Requests for
installation of third-party software to the shell and
web servers will not generally be honored. Additional
information about the policy used in the Compile Farm
may be seen at:
https://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?group_id=1&docid=762#additio
nal_software

Supported languages for the project web service will
include: PHP, Perl, Python, ruby and Tcl. All Fedora
Core 2-supplied Perl modules, PHP modules and Python
components will be installed on these new hosts. We
have no plans to offer additional components at this time.

We believe that this new policy will help to keep hosts
fully up-to-date, while encouraging projects to
maintain third-party software for themselves as needed.

It should be noted that the frequency of OS upgrades
will be increased as part of this new plan. The exact
package load of these hosts is subject to change in the
future, based on the package offering provided by the
OS vendor. Our current plan is to continue use of the
Fedora Linux platform in support of our project web
service for the foreseeable future. Future upgrades
will be announced on the Site Status page:
https://sourceforge.net/docs/A04/

Questions or concerns regarding this upgrade may be
directed to SourceForge.net staff by submitting a
Support Request as per:
https://sourceforge.net/docs/C01/#support_site

Thank you,

SourceForge.net staff

The build of PHP used on the project web servers has been
rebuilt to include gdbm support.

Projects currently using gdbm are encouraged to transition
to our MySQL database service. There is some inclination
that gdbm support will be removed in the future, when we
move to the stock PHP packages offered by our distribution
provider; these packages do not include gdbm support.

An alternate version of Apache has been selected for this
upgrade, 1.3.33.

The upgrade, as documented, was completed on 2004-12-05.

PHP scripts and CGIs should be updated to reflect this new
configuration.

Inquiries regarding the upgrade or the software load on the
new hosts should be directed to SourceForge.net staff by
submitting a Support Request at:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=1&atid=200001

This request will remain open for approximately one week;
any updates to the project web service that relate to
multiple projects during this time period will be referenced
here.

Thank you,

Jacob Moorman

The date of this upgrade has been set as 2004-12-04 (a
Saturday). Downtime is expected to be minimal. Projects
should prepare by recompiling their compiled CGI scripts as
needed (using the Compile Farm) and determine what
configuration changes may be needed, or designate a member
of their team to verify proper project web-based application
operation post-upgrade.
