5 Long file-names & funny characters support, FATX 2.x - ID: 697099
Last Update: Settings changed ( gamester17 )

Hi!

Last night, I tried to copy my MP3s to my Xbox.
Although I used prexbcopy, I had to do some manual
"tuning".

But even if prexbcopy would have worked flawless, the
limitiation to 42 characters and the very limited
character set (excluding common characters like ä or ß)
is very annoying.

Would it be possible to add support for long file names
to an upcoming release of XBMP? I'm very aware that
the above mentioned problems are caused by the FATX
filesystem and not by XBMP. To circumvent this, I was
thinking if it might be possible to add something like
the TRANS.TBL found on (normal) ISO-Images.

Ie. a textfile containing a mapping of a short name to
a long name. It would be wonderful if XBMP could read
this file and then display the "file name" from this file.

So, suppose the following file:

FOO~1.mp3 The wonderful FOO song, performed by Ärzte.mp3

Since I'm no C hacker, I can't implement something like
this myself. I could, however, write a Windows/Linux
program to create such translation files.

Not sure if this info could be of any use for the developers
but it is an interesting read never the less ;-)

"Xbox FATX Hacking by Michael Steil
....there still a lot more possibilities. To name a few:
* filenames with more than 41 characters (up to 255)
* convert the partition to FATX32
* change cluster size
* change number of FAT copies
* more FAT errors"

Again, wonder when Avalaunch will release their FATX2 code?

Wonder when "Avalaunch" will release their FATX2 code ;)
(If implemented then be very nice if integrated into FTP)

Another reason for this feature (or against network): It's
easy to take the Xbox to other places. These places might
not have network access - however the harddisk is always there.

No, XBMP's built-in FTP server should not create such a
file. The FTP server should behave like it behaves now. It
should be the responsibility of the user to create such a
file and to upload files which Xbox can handle.

I was merely thinking, that Xbox should read the translation
file.

Regarding playing over network: I'm mainly using Linux and
the Linux streaming servers suck in comparison to the
Windows servers (feature wise). So network isn't really a
viable solution. And also, I don't want to have the server
running just because I'd like to watch a movie or listen to
some music. And lastly, the best network option (SMB) does
not work very well in XBMP. I'm actually somewhat
disappointed by the network performance of XBMP wrt. this.

Do not think this is fiesable to do from XBMP when putting
things on the Xbox harddrive, but I could be wrong. The thing
you are describing is like you say not an XBMP limitation, it's
a limitation with the Xbox file system (a.k.a. FAT-X), if you
play a file over the network from PC which has FAT32 or
NTFS you will not see this problem so that is at least a
workaround if you do not want to rename your files.

just my 2 cents
